Kicking Captain Grumpy Pants Down a Few Notches

You’ve had a long, rough day and you’re ready to go home…only to realize it’s 10:00 am and you just finished the last sip of your latte. As you’re counting down the minutes on the clock, all you can think of is all the lousy things going on in your life. Bottom line is.. you’re in a crappy mood and this seems to be a newly occurring attitude. Don’t get me wrong, Captain Grumpy Pants is allowed to come out once in a while but common, it’s time to batten down the hatches, and take sail!

Before you ride the reigns of the Captain status, take action with the following suggestions and you’ll be back to yourself in noooo time at all…

Eat GOOD food!
Wouldja, couldja guessed? What you eat actually impacts your mood! Mind boggling. If you’re going to run with one suggestion, remember one thing: cut the crap! Although you may feel all warm and fuzzy when devouring the last slice of cake, we’ve all experienced the aftermath. I will say this one last time (right.) refined, processed, ooey, gooey CRAP is full of simple carbohydrates. Once you’re little sugar rush has ended, your blood sugar levels drastically drop and you experience symptoms which include irritability (grumpiness!). below is a list of specific nutrients you may want to increase in your diet.
Folic Acid: wild rice, beans, dark greens
Vitamin B12: sea veggies (kelp!), nutritional yeast (add this into almost anything), miso, fermented foods (sauerkraut), eggs, animal products
Magnesium: oat bran, brown rice, nuts, molasses
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: walnuts, seeds (chia, hemp)
Chromium: broccoli, grapes, oranges, whole grains
Zinc: beans, nuts, oatmeal (remember: no zinc, no think, no dink. No wonder you’re feeling a little bit like Debbie Downer)

Breathe it Out
If you’re not in the position to turn up the music and belch the lyrics to your favourite tune, try taking a deep breathe. This simple task will put you in a calmer state. Nancy Zi, Cali-based breathing expert says: breathe correctly and you can “melt away tension and stress, improve energy or simply relax and unwind”.

20 Things
Make a list (hand write, none of this computer nonsense!) of 20 things that make you happy. It may sound silly to some of you but it’s definitely something worth trying.. who knows, maybe you’ll get to 50! To get the creative juices flowin’…
1.  my family and friends
2. vitameatavegamin
3. my old lady sweater
4. my health
5. davids tea
6. Ames charm from the Bachelorette! 😉
Yadda, yadda yadda. I think you get the gist of it.

Get Laid!
There, I said it. Research suggests that adults who begin their day this way are healthier and happier than those who opt for their morning routine of pancakes and bacon with a side of coffee. Dr. Debby Herbenick, an American research scientist and sex advice columnist, said: “Having sex in the morning releases the feel-good chemical oxytocin, which makes couples feel loving and bonded all day long.” Still feel like hitting the snooze button in the morning?

Exercise
Time to get off your ass and get moving. A workout at the gym or a brisk walk can certainly help. Physical activity stimulates many brain chemicals which are likely to leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. Not to mention those new abs you’ll develop!

With these few yet simple tips, soon you’ll be sailing into clear water. Nobody likes a Captain Grumpy Pants, it’s time to retire.
