Wunderkind Wednesday – Skin Expert: Jen, owner of Olivier

Finding a skin care product that doesn’t contain ingredients that will send us running in the opposite direction can be difficult. What’s even more difficult is finding a skin care product that doesn’t smell like you’ve camped out in the forest for a month. Unfortunately, you can’t avoid washing your hair, moisturizing the legs or lathering your skin in soap, you dirty girl. Fortunately there’s Olivier.

I had the absolute pleasure of reacquainting with owner and skin expert, Jen of Olivier Waterloo. Besides the fact of  having raidating skin we see airbrushed in magazines, it is safe to say she knows her stuff!

What’s so great about Olivier?  Well, Jen says it best…

“In 1996, Isabel Gagne and Pierre Olivier saw the connection between health, beauty, well-being and the potential for a sustainable family business that could help people and protect our planet. The Olivier Soapery is the largest eco-skin care manufacturer in Canada and growing in the US specializing in the creation of the highest quality hand-m…ade, cold process olive oil skin care in the world, quite frankly and we can prove it.

Olivier combines the therapeutic properties of pure essential oils, the art of traditional soap making , the science of plants and flowers along with the history of pure olive oil to create a product that can only be described as extraordinary. They focus on using plant remedies to reinfoce the skins strength, botanically, ecologically and economically. All ingredients used are naturally occurring in nature.

Isabel and Pierre have created Canada’s first and only Soap Economuseum, an award winning soapery promoting an organic lifestyle with a multitude of handcrafted ecological products made on the south eastern coast of New Brunswick and Saguenay-Lac-St.Jean, Quebec.

Creating these traditional handmade soaps was just a hobby Isabel & Pierre used to add décor to their Acadian bed and breakfast…..and now Olivier has become an ambassador of New Brunswick and the United States…creating a connection between health, beauty, and well being….while representing a philosophy of living pure and pursuing your dreams.”

Why should you care?
It is important to remember that when you apply or inhale a skin care product, it penetraits the skin and it is the exact SAME as eating it! Many skin care products today likely contain ingredients which are cancer-causing or that are linked to developmental problems. This includes products used on lips, hands, scalp, any sort of spray, powder, yadda yadda yadda. When unstudied or harmful chemicals are used in cosmetics, the risk and impact on your health is high.

What about plant-based products?

Sorry to burst your bubble folks, but even plant-based ingredients can be harmful. Reading labels can be difficult when trying to sort out what is truly “organic” or “natural” because truth-in-marketing rules for food don’t apply in the cosmetics world. Great.  An exception applies to products containing the USDA organic seal, or in this case..knowing a gal who knows a gal!

Fun Fact..

“On average, consumers use about 10 personal care products containing 126 ingredients per day. The government does not require health studies or pre-market testing for these products. The Cosmetics Ingredients Review (CIR), the industry’s self-policing safety panel, does not make up for FDA inaction. In 2007 EWG analysis found that over 30 years, the industry panel has reviewed the safety of just 13 percent of the 10,500 ingredients in personal care products.” – Skin Deep

How to prepare for flu season

Stuffy nose, sore throat, aching body and you sound like you’re about to cough up a fur ball. 2 words: Not..Attractive.

As I’m sure you have all noticed, it’s getting a little chilly outside and instead of our only concern being a sunburn, we now need to prepare for cold weather and everything it brings…including the flu season. How are you going to protect yourself this year?

The good news: our body by nature was built to survive. In this case, we have the immune system which is the body’s defence mechanism to fight off those foreign invaders we can’t always avoid. The bad news? It ain’t always so great! Just like a car, you need to take care the mechanism or chances are, it’s going to break down. When it isn’t in fine condition, the immune system can fail to operate and this is when you see signs and symptoms which can run you down and have an effect on your daily activities.

How to Tune up Your Body…

Bring in the Maid
I can NOT stress enough how important it is to detox your body once in a while. Along with boosting the immune system, when done properly it will allow your body to clear all the essential pathways to ensure proper elimination.

Bust a Move
Disease generally follows any blockage in the body. In other words, get off your lil’ tush up and do somethin’, whether it’s running, biking, swimming, sex, or simply going for a stroll. This will increase blood circulation (which carries essential nutrients) and stimulate your muscles which are needed to ensure your immune system is working efficiently.

Break the Cravings
Eating foods such as chips, pop, white breads, or anything  that is refined, processed or neuked will take a toll on your immune system. It is a MUST that you are consuming plenty of WATER, fruits, veggies and whole grains so your body is provided with the essential fuel to run the engine…and not break down!

Below is a scrumptiousssss tea full of all the goodies to keep your body kicking strong this season.

2 oranges, juiced
1 lemon, juiced
2 tsp. vanilla
1 thumb size piece of fresh ginger (the more, the better!)
1 tbsp. raw honey
1 tsp. herb of your choice (Echinacea, sage, golden seal [strong], astragalus)

Place all ingredients in a blender and mix until smooth. Take the liquid and strain it through cheesecloth into a sealed jar. In a mug, fill 1/4 of the cup with the mixture and fill the rest with boiling water. Add more honey if you prefer a little sweeter. Keep the leftover mixture refrigerated. Enjoy!

Oranges: contains powerful antioxidants, high in vitamin c to fight off airborne germs.
Lemons: increases production of white blood cells and antibodies, has an alkalinizing effect on the body (that’s a good thing!), antioxidant, stimulates digestion and is nutrient-rich.
Vanilla: antioxidant… and it just tastes yummy!
Ginger: has a warming effect on the body, an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti microbial, contains 2 natural antibiotics, helps eliminate congestion, eases throat pain, kills cold viruses, stimulates digestion and high in nutrients.
RAW Honey: neutralizes toxins, harmonizes the liver, antibacterial/allergenic/inflammatory/toxic, expectorant, reduces fever, mild sedative, PACKED with vitamins, enzymes and minerals. For optimal benefits, the honey must be raw and unpasteurized.
Herbs: use specific herbs depending on what you’re battling
