Coconuts…do what exactly?

Bruder bought a coconut, he bought it for a dime..

Okay, so maybe the cost of a coconut has gone up a little since Harry Nilsson but lemme get it straight…. coconuts are actually GOOD for you? Yes, yes, annnnd YES! If you don’t already have a jar (or maybe two) of Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, I suggest you do so.

Coconut oil is a heat-stable oil which is extracted from the meat of a mature coconut. Aside from the nourishing and delicious benefits   in the kitchen, coconut oil is also used as an affective treatment for disease and promotes healthy hair and skin. Pacific Islanders consider coconut oil to be “the cure for all illness” and is so highly valued by them as both a source of food and medicine that it is called “The Tree of Life.” Fortunately,  this miraculous oil is now becoming mainstream, allowing more and more people to reap the benefits in the kitchen, as a beauty product and as a treatment for disease.

In the Kitchen…
Coconut oil is a safe and healthy alternative for cooking with, especially when using high heat. The oil is comprised of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) which are more easily digested, immediately sent to your liver to be utilized as energy instead of fat, and do not require lipoproteins or special enzymes. This specific type of fat is considered so nutritious that they have been used in baby formulas and hospitals for those who are critically ill. Did I mention there is NO trans-fat OR cholesterol? Score! What are a few ways you use it in the kitchen?

  • In place of other oils when you saute, make a stir-fry, bake, grease a pan, etc.
  • Throw a teaspoon in your smoothie
  • Use on a salad
  • Add on popcorn in place of butter
  • Replace other fats in recipes

In the bedroom...
Beautify yourself with oil. Aside from the “good fats” which is known to be beneficial for healthy hair, skin and nails, coconut oil is known to be anti-aging and to restore moisture and skin elasticity. According to physiologist and biochemist Ray Peat, Ph.D. he considers coconut oil to be an antioxidant, due to its stability and resistance to oxidation and free radical formation. Plus, he feels it reduces our need for the antioxidant protection of vitamin E. Try a few of these beauty tips..

  • Highlight your cheekbones (just try it!!)
  • Use to shave your legs
  • Use as a deep conditioner for split ends (rub ‘er in, comb it through, do somethin’ fun then shampoo it out!)
  • Use as a make up remover
  • Replace your moisturizer

Under the sheets…
Yes, I’m not shy to say it! Use coconut oil by yourself or with a partner in place of lubricant to avoid rubbing nasty chemicals below the belt. Yes, it smells good, tastes good..and feels good? Caution… please be aware that oil + latex condoms = babies… or a pretty good chance.

In the body…
Wherever the coconut palm grows, the people have quickly learned its importance as a effective medicine and healing powers. Coconut oil contains a substance called “lauric acid” which is then converted in “monolaurin” which is a compound known to help strengthen the immune system. In traditional medicine, coconut is used to treat a wide variety of health problems including: abscesses, asthma, baldness, bronchitis, bruises, burns, colds, constipation, cough, dropsy, dysentery, earache, fever, flu, gingivitis, gonorrhea, irregular or painful menstruation, jaundice, kidney stones, lice, malnutrition, nausea, rash, scabies, scurvy, skin infections, sore throat, swelling, syphilis, toothache, tuberculosis, tumors, typhoid, ulcers, upset stomach, weakness, and wounds… to name a few. In modern medicine, well let’s just say the list is a lot longer!
